How to keep indoor plants from groing mold in the soil?
-
i forget to water so when i do i water them i water a lot... i think the moisture makes it easy for mold to grow on the top layer of the soil....the plants are all still doing fine i have had most of them for more than two yrs... is there something i can spray on the soil to stop it? any recommendations?

Answer:
Water deep into the soil. Not on the top of it. Water less often than you do now and in between just spray the leaves with water with a spray bottle.

White substances on the soil surface may indicate two things. If crusty or crystalline, it's probably an accumulation of salts. The crusty surface layer of soil can be removed and replaced with fresh soil between repottings. A white or light yellow mold-like growth may indicate the presence of a saprophytic soil fungus, a fungus that lives on dead or decaying matter. The fungus will not harm the plant but may indicate unsterile potting medium or an overwatered plant. You can sterilize the soil by baking it according to this website in either your oven or microwave. http://www.ag.ndsu.edu/pubs/plantsci/landscap/pp744w.htm I found that lighting is also very important. Check out this website, it is all inclusive on everything! http://pubs.caes.uga.edu/caespubs/pubcd/B1318/B1318.htm How can you tell if your plant is not receiving adequate light? The plant does not grow. The internodes (spaces between the leaves) on the new growth are much longer than the internodes on the older part of the plant. The new leaves are smaller than the older leaves. The leaf color is a lighter green on the newer foliage than on the older foliage. The older leaves are dead.

the best thing to do is repot your plants using fresh soil and then be more careful with watering in future - you can buy drip feeders for them so that they constantly get watered but not saturated. Check your roots havent got rot on them before repotting.

Apply one tub of unflavored yogurt (roughly 1 kg) to your indoor plants once a week. the probiotics will help stabilise alkali levels, thus lowing the specific capacity for mold to be fertilised
