How do you properly clean a brass mortar and pestle?

How can I clean an antique brass mortar and pestle?

  • I bought an antique mortar and pestle on eBay. It's made of brass and is beautifully tarnished. However, since I actually want to use this item to crush food and herbs and such, I'd like to clean out the inside at the very least. I don't want to use crazy chemicals, since I'm going to end up ingesting some of it. Can anyone give me advice on this? Thanks so much!

Lemon juice and salt or baking soda will remove tarnish, will also decrease "antique" value. Just scrub the inside with hot water and soap.

If you are only doing the inside AND it is not huge, just get 2 or 3 grades of steel wool and have at it. There are no chemicals involved, it is not that much work and it is an easy cleanup. Start with the thickest grade and work down to "000" grade, it will shine like new.
