What are 10 causes of FIRE in a house?

What causes the fireplace to pour smoke into the house when i open the glass doors to add more firewood?

  • When I have a fire in our fireplace, it burns well and the smoke stays in the fireplace/goes up the chimney, but when I open the glass doors to stoke the fire/add wood, the smoke comes pouring into the house. I had the fireplace serviced in the fall and they added a new chimney cap/damper. I cleaned out the ashes today and looked up the chimney and can see all the way to the top and can see outside light in there so i know it is clear. Can anyone suggest solutions or explanations for what causes the smoke to enter house when doors are open? I keep the little vents below the doors open when the fire is going. The fire is plenty hot cause when i open the doors i feel a blast of heat from the hot coals and fire burning. Thanks for the help :)

  • Answer:

You need suction up the chimney when the doors are open. Open the "flue damper" when door is open. Fit a Cowl on top of the chimney- it rotates with the wind causing a suction to the flue-way.

The smoke is carried by the hot air from the fire. When you open the glass doors, the hot air prefers to exit into your house versus going up the chimney. Normally, fireplaces expect the room to be cold and drafty. So the air pressure of the room keeps the hot air seeking the lower pressure of the flue. You might have a very well insulated room. You might also try watching what happens when the little vents are CLOSED. Try opening a door or a window and see how that affects the smoke.

Make sure the flue is open so the smoke can leave

You should have a damper that needs adjusting. The air going up the chimney is not being drawn right.

The damper needs to be open. Don't immediately open the glass doors until you see that the fire is drawing and burning more. Fire has to draw air from outside to burn more and less smoke. Always, open the door slowly so the fire can start to draw more air otherwise you are letting smoke come back into your room. If the fire is burning good with the damper open then you don't have a problem with the damper. You may need to clean your chimney liner to remove built up creosote which can result in a chimney fire. Jo Ann

your doors are too 'tight'... don't close them completely... leave a crack open... if they are tight, when you suddenly pull them open, they are sucking the smoke out with the doors..... just the opposite of you fanning the flames.....
