Can the reverse osmosis system be disabled on a refrigerator?
-
We bought a new refrigerator and were not informed that it had a reverse osmosis system (never even heard of it.) The ice from our icemaker tastes salty but the water does not. I have researched this and it appears to be because of this system and possible low water pressure. Is there any way to disable the RO system? Or is there any way to increase the water pressure? We live way out in the country and get our water from a small company.

Answer:
It sounds like your RO system is plumbed wrong. If it is truly an RO system, it has to have a drain tube so that the system can discharge the salts and minerals to your "sewer" drain. If your ice tastes salty, it sounds like that discharge tube was plumbed to your ice maker instead of the house drain. an understanding of how an RO is plumbed can enable you to re-route some of the tubing to either make it work properly or have it just use the sand/charcoal filter system to clean the water before going to the drinking water fount and the ice maker. That said, if I were there, I would see if I could re-plumb the system so that the water that is going to the drinking fount is "T"ed off to also go to the ice maker. so there would be no question as to where the ice maker is getting it's water. Since this is a new system, you have a warranty that you can use to get the service man to come out and fix it.

Have to be honest, I have never seen this question before and I can't imagine there is a way to disable the system. Your water tastes OK but the ice is salty? Maybe the freezing grabs any particulates? I would ask this question of the manufacturer before doing anything else and if it isn't what you bargained for,and is new, I would speak to the store manager and ask if you can return it because it wasn't disclosed there was a RO system on board and you are unsatisfied. Most big box retailers will do a lot to keep you happy, and then they sell to another person a few bucks cheaper. Please re-post this when you get an answer so we can know going forward if any others come up with the same problem. Thanks.
