What is the best thing or biggest bargain that you have purchased in a charity shop?
-
Now I often to to charity shops to look for books/CDs and have picked up some really good, often out of print stuff. There is also a fantastic furniture/electrical charity shop near me which has some interesting items. Also in London in places like Kensington there are special Oxfam shops with designer dresses etc. So what is the best item you have found?

LOL ( Aurora is going to pee herself when she sees this Q ) She is Queen of all things charity shop.... And I'm her apprentice :-) I've gone to charity shops since I was about 17. Initially it was to buy 1950's clothes ( I know I know...shurrup) Now it's books and for want of a better word nick-nacks. The best charity shops I've ever come across are in Shrewsbury. The oXfam book shop in particular. The best thing I've bought? Prob a table that had been covered in thick naff varnish and when I restored it , (aged 19 ....*smack*) it was walnut . Gorgeous , I've still got it. Oh and a velociraptor mug for my son. Its a huge colossal thing made out of concrete I think but the look on his face when I made his hot choc.....aww. EDIT-Oooh I v'e just remembered something else..a copy of A Town Like Alice by Nevil Shute, one of my fave books, and the hardback cover is covered in mug rings, the pages are all yellow but there is an inscription inside that says " To Ann, I hope this helps you to understand"..not signed by anyone but its written in fountain pen and in an old fashioned hand.Drives me mental thinking about who, why and when. EDIT 2-CV be careful what you wish for..I bought a suede jacket in 1987 from Aflecks Palace in Manchestrer(second hand vintage mecca) and then wore it to a club that night. When I came back from the bar my mate said someone had 'knifed' my jacket because there was a huge gash in the back, I was heartbroken , but then when I took it off to check it properly the friggin arm FELL OFF the jacket collapsed before my very eyes!!! Christ knows what it was made of.......

OMG Where do I start. My wardrobe is a mixture of M&S and charity shop chic!!!! My favourite charity shop sells everything for £1 I have a Gerry Weber skirt and blouse for £1 each, I bought my grand daughter a china doll for again £1. Think the best 'bargain' I have bought has to be a brand new pair of Next trousers that fit me perfectly, again for £1. I am getting to the point where I begrudge paying full price for anything. LOL EDIT 1 Hazzie, you beat me to it..... Just!!! I knew would find you on here!!! LOL EDIT 2 Hey Hellz, You saying I'm a cheapskate???? LOLOL Oh yes, Hellz reminded me I have a great pair of Deichmann sandals, guess how much they cost????? ;--)) EDIT 3 I am supposed to be cleaning the bathroom. ; -- ))) but my mind keeps going back to this Q. A couple of years ago I went to New York with my daughter, and I was most miffed cos she wouldn't go to the thrift shops there. I have heard that they are amazing!!! So....... Not going there with HER again. lol

LOL it's funny, when I saw this question "starred by Haz" in my profile, I immediately assumed Aurora had asked it ( don't know why though!!, lol ) !!! :D Anyway, to the question. We've always given old clothes, toys, etc to charity shops, and we always end up going in and looking around. I've never really found anything 'exquisite', lol, but I've always been totally obsessed with nick-nacks ( you should see my room, !! ), like little figures made from china, or clay, and I always find one or two for 50 p each. My room is cluttered with them. :D Apart from that, just a few books really, which I've ended up giving back after reading them, otherwise there wouldn't be space to move!! And as for clothes / shoes: I only ever bought one pair of shoes from a charity shop - a pair of pink sandals for Brighton beach when I was about 6. Another cool question! :D x

I bought a cheap painting for a couple of bucks but after I got it home and took it apart for the frame found underneath it a hidden artwork by a famous artist that sold for millions of dollars at auction and now I can stay home and spend all my time answering questions on YA it's all wonderfull and thanks to the charity shop I never have to shop there again and now maids and servants do my bidding, and kings, queens, and presidents come to me for advise. My life has been transformed by that one purchase. Oh, and there was a winning lottery ticket tucked in the back, too.

So far, my husband found real expensive complete suits and he bought three of them for under $40.00 at a Goodwill. One suit I found out was worth $300! We go occasionally to find things. :-)
Mom of 2 great boys
A Harrods taylor made 3 piece suit in very good wool. It was even the correct size! This is worrying as I am an odd size. It cost £30, I bet the bloke who had it made paid a lot more than that.
