How do I apply for section 8 housing?

Should I apply for section 8 or public housing? which one is best or better, more convenient?

  • Hi section 8 housing is a program that pays 70% of your rent plus utilities, on the other hand public housing is a property that the goverment gives you for free to live in. but I heard that conditions are poor and gangster like areas.

    Section 8 is your best best. With section 8, you get a voucher that you can take from apt. to apt. You can use it in any state - You can have it for life (as long as you don't violate program regulations and you remain within income guidelines) and you can pass it on to other members of your household. You can rent anywhere, there are no restrictions as long as the landlord is willing to accept it. With public housing, the assistance remains with the apt. So if you move out, you lose it. You do face somewhat bad conditions - like the ones you described, even in the best of neighborhoods.

I lived in public housing for 6 years. I would recommend it because it's more of a community, I think. Either way, you're possibly going to be dealing with unresponsive management and run-down conditions. It depends where you are. In chicago, where I lived, the Chicago Housing Authority stopped leasing apartments in 1999, if I'm not mistaken. If you can get either one, you might consider yourself lucky. Times have been changing for about 10 years, since the federal government declared their intention to eliminate 100,000 units of public housing. Part of that 'welfare reform' BS.
