How To Find Sewing Videos?

How should I fix my sewing machine?

  • I got a sewing machine a couple of months back and I didn't know how to work it then. Well I started to play with it and figured I had somewhat of an idea on working it after watching many how to videos. One thing led to another and I guess some strings got stuck in the gears and now it makes an odd sound. Is there a possibility that I can fix it without taking it to a shop? P.S my grandmother gave it to me and we couldn't find the pamphlet.

  • Answer:

Depends on where "the gears" are, and what's actually wrong. First, what make and model of machine is it? There are often free copies available for download for many machines. If you tell us, I'll help you look. Second, here's how you do a basic machine cleaning: http://aces.nmsu.edu/pubs/_c/c-102.html If it's a new machine, going beyond the cleaning and care information in the manual may void the warranty on the machine, so beware of that. Most of the time, what newbies get are thread snarls under the needle plate and around the bobbin case and sewing hook. Take your time to evict all the dustbunnies and bits of thread in the area, and take things apart (again, as directed in the manual) to get to all the bits of thread. Use only the recommended lubricant. WD-40 is a solvent, not a lubricant, and evaporates leaving your machine with metal-on-metal wear. 3-in-1 and similar household oils gum up after awhile and freeze the machine, costing you a small fortune or a long time to get it working again. Use regular sewing machine oil -- Walmart carries a 4 oz bottle of Singer oil for about $2.50 -- that's about a lifetime supply for most people. You can use any brand of sewing machine oil, and you can find sewing machine oil at most fabric stores, as well as sewing machine shops and repair shops.

First avoid cutting or snapping the thread. Try to unwind it from the way it went on. Try to grip a thread end and then turn the machine backward. If that don't work make one cut in the thread and repeat the above instructions. Unusual for the thread to get into the gears. Normally gets wrapped around the take up leaver mechanism.
