Sewer gases in a basement bathroom when pump used?

• I have a basement bathroom that is starting to smell of sewer gases badly when the toilet is flushed. I had this problem when I first moved in 5 years ago, but have not had it since then. (I have since finished my basement) The toilet is on a pump as the bathroom is below the septic tank. The pump is sealed and there is a pipe for the waste to be pumped out and a separate vent pipe that comes out between the two floors. I have ran water in the bathtub to ensure the trap is full as well as the sink. There are not any other drains (floor drains, washer drains, etc) in the basement. There is a air handler unit in same room as the pump but a small condensate pump takes care of that water. The smell seems to be coming from the toilet as I don't smell it from the drains in the sink or tub. Also, I don't smell gases in the separate storage room that has the pump that is behind the bathroom wall even when the pump is activated. The bathroom smells awful when pumped as well as the finished space. When not pumped, the bathroom still has a faint smell that seems to be coming from the toilet. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated!!

  the problem could be how the basement toilet plumbing was done. that smell is coming from outside. there should be a snake shaped pipe in the toilet drains that is filled with water. this is usually what prevents bad odors from coming back into your house. it could be that the developers did not install this snake shaped pipe and hence the bad odors are allowed to travel as they please. all you need to do is have it re installed. you can read more about the re installation process on this site http://www.basementtoilet.net
