What's the best gadget to remove snow off your roof?

You need more than a gadget. Rakes work very well but are mainly used to pull down about 2 feet of snow at the edges only. For anything further up you can use a push type shovel. Be careful not to scrape any asphalt off the shingles and walk carefully. Shingles are brittle when cold and can be easily damaged.

Your roof is probably not to steep so try extension ladder with a rope tied to the lower step, extend the ladder up to full extension which would tip the ladder on the roof, then by pulling the rope the ladder slides down removing some snow . Hope it works?

I myself live in a two-story Colonial and have been thinking about this. The roof pitch is roughly 6 over 12. I've decided that any snow rake simply won't be long enough to reach; my first floor isn't at ground level, maybe 3-4' higher. So even a 20' isn't gonna do much. So, here's what I plan to try later today. I just purchased 200' of polypropylene rope, about a half-inch in diameter. I'm gonna throw it over my roof-maybe tape it good to a softball. With me in the front of the house and my son in the back I'm planning on shaving/sawing off the snow as we walk down the length of the roof. I'm hoping it will just fall off after we cut and slice through the underlying layers. This seems a lot safer than getting on a ladder, or your roof, especially in this weather. Cost of the rope was $17. Cheap solution if it works. My concern is shingle damage at the roof peak, but I intend to be gentle.

A roof rake is the best tool for the job. It's not an easy job. Watch out for crashing mounds of wet snow. For a job like this you might want to hire a professional. You'll stay a lot dryer and warmer. You can get three free quotes from this site.

2 people, a long rope and a heavy weight on a string. Throw the weight on the string over part of the snow, attach the rope to the string and then pull the rope between the 2 of you. This works best on over hangs, it will still work on sections of the roof as long as you can get the weight over the roof. It takes time and you must stand clear of the falling snow pack. Take small chunks until you get the hang of it.

Well, if the roof collapses, then not getting one is more expensive. The flimsy ones are made that way to make them lighter and easier to handle. I would pay extra for quality and durability, but in an emergency, anything, including a landscaper's rake (3ft wide almost looks like a garden rake) would work.

Hi Bella, I recommend finding a reputable roofing or snow removal company in your area to remove the snow for you. This is the best way to not only avoid physical harm or danger, but also to help prevent damage to your property. Best of luck!

anything too heavy duty and you wont be able to lift it very far back onto the roof...i use my roof rake to drag down as far as it will reach and then put a ladder up and shovel the rest...plastic shovel to lessen the wear on the shingles...
