How long should you use an oil burner?

Can you use lamp oil to start a coal burner?

  • My parents decided to go out of town for a bit, and our coal burner went out while i was at work. I can't find anything that says that you cant use oil to start it, so would lamp oil work?

  • Answer:

IF you use lamp oil, use only a very little bit, less than a quarter cup. Lamp oil is less volatile than gas, but fumes can still accumulate and cause you to lose your eyebrows, or worse you get burnt, or cause damage to the burner. Pour 1/4 cup lamp oil into a separate container. Put capped lamp oil container 10 feet away. Put some newspaper under some coal and a little oil, from the 1/4 cup container, to soak paper and coal. Light it up at your own risk.

anything combustible will work - just be careful.

I'd like to use my sweet damp oil on your mom's coal burner.

It's doubtful that it would work. Unlike charcoal it won't sink into coal, it will burn off the top before the coal starts. Instead use wood kindling to get it started.
