Outlets for a California Wall.?
-
What I want to know is are there multiple types of GFCI boxes to fit California walls and are there actually double boxes available for reduced space installations? I recently had a repairman come in to put in two outlets in a partition wall between the living room and kitchen in my house. The repairman called the wall a California wall and said it would require reduced space boxes. When he did the work he left a small corner of a GFCI box out from the wall because he said he could not get it to fit properly. The other corner is flush to the wall but one corner has about 1/8" gap between the wall and the wall plate. He was also supposed to do a double box on another part of the wall and only did a single as he said they did not make double boxes. I feel the guy was being lazy and just using what he had on hand instead of ordering the proper parts and doing the job correctly. Please list your experience with your answer.

Answer:
I'm not an electrician, but have remodeled a couple of houses and did professional home inspections. I don't know what a California Wall is, but it sounds like it's narrower than standard 2x4 framing. The shallowest GFCI I have seen is one made by Pass & Seymour called a Shallow While-In-Use Safety Outlet (GFCI) Kit. It's made for outdoor use, is 1.18" deep and fits in a 2.1" deep box. Double boxes are definitely available, but double GFCI cover plates are more rare. All I can recall seeing is a brass double GFCI cover plate at Home Depot. A specialty electrical supply house may be able to order something special. Instead of putting in GFCI receptacles have you considered installing a GFCI breaker for the circuit you want to protect? Then you wouldn't have to worry about using the deep GFCI reseptacles.
