How To Kill Termites?

What insecticide can I use to kill termites?

  • I just purchased a home and the seller's agent offered an "antique" table saw. The frame of the table saw is built from wood. It's been in the garage for about 2 months. I used it today and found termite droppings in some cavities on the wood frame. Hopefully, it's an old infestation and hopefully it didn't make its way into the rest of the house, but what can I spray all over the wood frame? I tried malathion today, but searched on google and some say malathion won't work. I live in Southern California.

For more information than you can possibly use, read http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn7440.html The simplest way to kill them would be to bag it with plastic and pump hot air in (be sure to allow some out) so that it all gets over 50 C or 120 F for a bit over an hour. They'll melt/cook. Check that the plastic can take it first. Then seal every bit of the wood with filler and lacquer or paint so they don't get in again. There's a good chance they're not old. If there are live drywood termites surviving inside a structure, then it is possible/likely that other small colonies exist. Get the place properly inspected again. Ask your inspector to run the TermaTrac (termatrac.com) over the saw. It will detect any movement in the wood.

I was a Pest Control Inspector in Massachusetts and Vermont (I'm the guy who designed the programs for every type of situation you can imagine, and some you wouldn't want to imagine in your worst nightmare). As an unlicensed applicator, there is not a single (effective) method you can perform on your own for the control of termites. The control methods differ greatly for drywood termites as opposed to subteranian termites. If you think there is a possibility that you have termites in the structure (and trust me here, you DO have reason for concern), get some PROFESSIONALS out there for some free inspections. Most reputable companies will identify the insect(s) and supply you with a treatment plan/service proposal at no charge.

The best thing for you to do is contact your local pest control company to look at it. That way they can identify which type of termite that is and treat properly. There is orange oil that can be used but that is for drywood termites. If you have subterranean termites you might need to find a different product. A product called Termite is a great product for termites. It also would not hurt to have the garage inspected again to make sure the termites are not in any other areas.

Termites need ground contact. What you've probably got is carpenter ants. Raid will 'do em'.
