How do I unclog my shower drain?

  • I live in an old apartment from the 70's on a college campus and I've never run into this issue...maybe because I've never lived in a house that my family didn't have built, but I can't shower for more than 5 minutes without the immediate threat of an overflow! I tried cleaning it out once by scrubbing, but all that came out was nasty black stuff bleh :p how do I unclog it? I bought a hair stopper to put in there after I get it unclogged. Thanks guys. Much appreciated.

    Adrift's recommendation sounds good, but what bothers me is that it takes five minutes for the drain to back up. This tell me the clog is farther down the line than perhaps the baking soda and vinegar can reach. Try Adrift's solution, but if it doesn't work after a second attempt, you might have to call in a plumber to snake out your drain. The hair stopper is a good idea, since the biggest cause of bathroom drain clogs (other than the toilet) is from hair.

Take some baking soda from your kitchen and pour a cup of it down the drain. Pour 1/2 a cup of vinegar on top of that. This will cause a chemical reaction. Lots of popping and spitting. Let it stew a while. This will loosen things up. After 20 minutes or so, pour some boiling water into the drain and it should drain right out

You have a clog somewhere. Could be many places. I can only suggest that you plunge like crazy and hope you break it free. There are things you can put down the drain that will help unclog hair and that might help. And then plunge some more. Or call a plumber.
