Can I have the landlord remove this mold?
-
The bathroom fan is broken (has been since I moved in). It wasn't a problem when I first moved in, but since we've gone through a whole Portland winter with it like that, there has been more and more condensation on the toilet, even when we leave the window open (burr!). Can I ask the landlord to remove the mold, since it formed because of the fan being broken? Or does the fact that I didn't report the fan being broken for so long negate that? Or, maybe it's just plain my responsibility regardless? In case it matters - it's not just plain mildew, it's black mold, pink mold, beige mold... really gross. Also, I think there was some mold on the toilet (between the tank and bowl) when I moved in, but I didn't think much of it then.

Answer:
yes the landlord should remove the mold. i say this because if the fan was broken when you moved in and the fan was a part of the mold then the landlord should remove the mold and fix the fan.

What a bunch of tosser these people are who answer this question they are telling you to threaten the owner if he does not clean the problem doing whatever to the owner does he even know a problem exists the mold is present because you failed to tell the landlord that the exhaust fan was broken and the mold is the fruit of your own stupidity if you had informed the landlord that the fan was broken he would of repaired it as this is an item that cant get vandalized and you wouldn't have a mold problem in the first place if i was your landlord i would be suing you for allowing my property to deteriorate from your stupidity because im sure it would say somewhere in your lease to advise the owner or his representative of any problems with the house/unit did you do that , "no" and now you expect him to clean up after you, do you see any moral issue forming here ?

Depending on the wording of your lease, in most cases the landlord is responsible for all repairs. He should fix the fan and remove the mold. Just let him know you have an issue. If he/ she is a reputable landlord he will take care of any issues you have. Always report any broken or non working items when they happen. As you can see one thing can lead to other problems. Your landlord makes income from this property and wants to keep it in good repair ( most of them anyway)

Bleach and water will clean the mold off. Vinegar and water will clean the mold off. Cleaning the commode weekly will prevent the mold from forming. The manager should not clean your commode. Soap and water will clean the commode.

Just wash the area with bleach and it will kill the mold. If you want to keep the mold away then use Zinsser bathroom paint. It will keep it in check for a few years even without the fan.
It is not his fault that you don't keep up with the cleaning of your bathroom. Maybe If you where to give the room a through cleaning once a week it won't have mold. Do you expect him to clean the soap scum and mold in your tub? We scrub our toilet also once a week. You can't blame it on the fan. I don't even have a fan and I don't have a mold problem, but I stay ahead by cleaning once a week. If I were the Land You would be doing your own cleaning and I would be thinking the next thing they will want me to clean is the poop stains in their toilet. Get yourself some bleach a brush and bucket of warm water, that is how its done at least that's what I saw on the video. And you would be stupid to listen to the Idiot that say the state will shut them down, Even if they did shut him down where would that put you. OUT IN THE COLD looking for an appartment and not having a referance if you found a vacant one.

No this is the landlord responsibilty and tell him if it doesnt get fixed you will call the state and have them check for the mold issue they can shut it right down they dont let people live in mold it can make you very sick its a health issue call the health dept and ask them
