What does this mean for a mold test in home construction?
-
What does this reading mean for a mold test? Today a mold expert came to the house I'm renting and tested the areas around the windows. He had a device he was using and spoke the reading into his tape recorder. The reading in my main room he said was 60%. What does this number mean? Is it a 60% chance there is or is not mold? Although they are storm windows, I've had problems with water building up inside the windows and leaking onto the carpet, which has damaged my stuff and sometimes saturated the carpet and padding. I'm not big on complaining or being a trouble to anyone and my landlord is usually very fair and honest. The problem is, over 6 months or so, I've developed a cough and get frequent headaches. I'm hoping there is no mold, but the guy who did the testing said there are "issues" in the house, but would not explain what the readings indicated. The expert sprayed some anti mold liquid around the windows and on the edges of the carpet, before leaving. Thanks for your time.

Answer:
You have mold, no doubt about it. It is around the windows, behind the walls, in the carpet, padding and sub-floor where the moisture has collected over time. The 60% measurement probably meant humidity, but not knowing which device he was using, it is hard to know for sure. Using bleach is not going to help the problem. The water issue must be properly repaired, and the affected structural elements treated or replaced. Water building up on the windows in not acceptable. There is an installation problem, air circulation problem, or water coming from somewhere else. Your landlord should take care of this problem immediately and check other areas of your living space to insure that there are no problems elsewhere. Structural mold and mildew is very serious and can cause long term health problems. It sounds like you already have symptoms, and if I were you, I would find a healthier place to live because you are in danger. This is not a joke so please take care of your health asap.

Keep spraying these windows with clorox and water in a spray bottle. Clorox kills any type of mildew or mold. These conditions are common in a high humidity area of the earth.

Here are a couple of great articles about mold and mildew. It is the landlords responsibility to maintain the property. It is not necessarily your fault if the building has mold. http://www.ezfix101.com/2012/01/how-to-prevent-moisture-and-mold.html http://www.ezfix101.com/2011/12/does-your-home-have-mold.html
