How do I replace a halogen bulb in a hanging tea light?
-
I am having an extremely difficult time replacing a tiny halogen bulb in a hanging tea light in my kitchen. There is no identifying information on the fixture or on the original bulbs (which were in the fixtures when I moved in). The first bulb stopped working, so I unscrewed the cover and pulled the bulb straight out (2 prongs). I took the bulb to the store, bought what I thought was an identical bulb, tried it, and it burnt out the next day (rather, it stopped glowing, but would glow when I "fiddle" with it in the fixture, but then soon goes out again). I used rubber gloves to install the bulb, never touching the bare bulb. I've tried 50W and 35W, both stop working except when I "fiddle" with the bulb by pushing it in, angling it, etc. But the bulbs always burn out/stop working. First tried the Halogen T4 12 volt 50 watt bulb with GY6.35 base. Next, tried, the same bulb with only 35 watts. Am I using the right bulb? How can it be this difficult to change a light bulb? How hard in should I be pushing the bulb? Getting so frustrated!

Answer:
Halogens are hot lamps and good job not touching them. The oils from your skin will heat up hotter than the glass and eventually bust. If it is a low voltage system {12volts} then check your terminals for oxide, carbon, or weathered build up. This will act similar to what your telling. To find the correct lamp you could take the original with you if available:...or remove the reflector shield behind the lamp and see if it has a transformer or ballast. If so this might be your problem and not the lamp. Lamps don't usually fit in the incorrect bases, there is usually something different in the bases or lamp that prevent this. I'm sorry but I cant place the lamp GY6.35 base can you update with the fixture info? I can then cross reference with my catalogs {I design electrical systems for commercial building mostly with a few high-end wineries and custom homes here in the Napa Valley} Any information on the fixture is helpful, and you might find the lamps specifications in there as well. Good Luck I'm putting this on clipboard watch for updates.
