How do you fix a bad roof leak? ?
-
So I have a leak on too of my closet but it's gotten to a point where the leak has made the wood swell up and now my roof has a straight slit cut. I know it'll b a Matter of time before that wood falls on top of us. Right now it just a slit on the side about 3 feet it's still hanging I there but with this rain it's not gonna last and it seems to be running and leaking in other areas making the slit bigger. How do I fix this and what would I need to buy and how much would it cost for me to fix this? (estimate)

Answer:
Investigate where the leak is coming from first. Its actually quite unusual for a leak to be right above where the stain is on the ceiling. common leak areas are flashing around vent pipes and seams between places where roof shingles butt each other such as where rooflines merge. With such serious leaks its likely that the wood is already rotten and needs replacing. Failure to replace it invites termites and carpenter ants....they literally can smell wet wood, its quite amazing. If you see an ant trail up the side of your house they're heading for that hole in your roof. The fix is to pull up all the roof shingles around the hole, replace the roof decking thats damaged, and then re-tar paper and reshingle. if the leak is just around a vent flashing, then a $5.00 replacement flashing will fix it. you will have to pull up a number of shingles to replace one though.

No one here can give you advice on how to fix it without seeing the problem. Seeing as you have no clue as to what you're doing, my best advice is to call a roofer. In the meantime you might want to throw a tarp over that part of the roof to keep the water out.

replace it

Nick is right, if the leak and the damage is as bad as you say, this is no job for you, hire a roofer to fix the damage. Stopping the leak is not enough, a collapsed roof from the damage would (pardon the pun) rain on your parade.

sounds like you have waited a little to late to replace a few shingles. You may have to tear off a section of shingles and replace some decking.OR if your planning on moving soon, buy a huge TARP and stretch over the area.It only leaks when its raining, RIGHT????
