How to get all the water out of the toilet bowl? (repairing it)?
-
I turned the water off in my house, then I flushed the toilet, but only half of the water flushed down. There's still half the water in the tank. I'm trying to replace the rubber seal under the toilet because it's leaking. I can't lift the toilet up though with that much water in it because it'll go all over my floor (doesn't help that the toilet water's bright blue from the disinfecting tablets we use in it). Any easy ways to get the rest of the water out?

The tank should be empty if you hold down the handle until it drains out fully. Don't just flush as you normally do. The rest of the water that is in the bowl is kept in place by a p trap so what you have to do is get a dozen towels and spread them out onto the floor so that when you remove the toilet from the floor the water will get caught up on the towels. Remove the old wax ring from the flange and replace it with the new one. I recommend the ring with the collar on it. Be sure you place the toilet back down on the floor gently and evenly or you will skwoosh the new ring out of proportion and it will leak. Get someone to help you set it back in place unless you are strong enough to balance the toilet. Buy an extra wax seal in case you smash the first one. Get a replacement kit in case you need to change out the bolts. Have Fun!

if you have a wet vac use that, if not, plung all you can out, soak the rest up with an old towel, replace the seal with a #3 or #4 wax gasket.

Keep flushing and then plunge with a toilet plunger. However, have a bunch of towels handy because no matter how hard you try...your going to have water coming from someplace.

I've replaced the wax ring several times in rental properties. Shut off the water supply. Flush the toilet. Use a big sponge to absorb the rest of the water in the tank. You've still got probably a full load of water in the bowl. Take a bucket of water and pour it in there quickly. The siphoning action of the flush will remove 95% of the water in the bowl. You have to see it to believe it. I was surprised the first time I did it. There will be about a cup or two of water left in the bottom. Use the sponge to take it out. You might as well remove the tank and replace the rubber gasket between the tank and the bowl. Then remove the bowl from the floor.

You will have to hold the flush valve flapper up. That should get rid of most of it. Then us a sponge for the rest. One word on those disinfecting tablet or the like. they rot rubber parts in the toilet no matter what they say.

You can plunge most of it down but your job will still be messy.

Use a sponge or a towel if you don't have a sponge. j

Usually you can just keep flushing the toilet until the water is down. There may be a small amount left but shouldn't be a big problem. Hope this helps. ...Rainy

Reach in and pull up the flapper, after turning off the water supply. This will get rid of most. The rest you can sponge out.
