Whats wrong with my self propelled lawn mower?

  • i have a john deer 6.75 hp Briggs and stratton rear wheel self propelled mower. I've had it for about 3 years i bought it brand new from lowes it has two options of running it with the mulching bag in the rear or it can throw the grass through the side. i always use it and change the spark plugs regularly and the oil and filters but for the first yr it worked perfect but after and now it takes forever to turn on i have to pull really hard and quick for about 20 minutes until it turns on it always has gas and oil and i've also cleaned the carburetor about three times and still it doesn't want to turn on quick. after i turn it on i can turn it off and it will turn on, on the first pull but getting it started takes forever. it has this liquid that says for fresh start that you must buy the little cups every time if runs out and i always replace it but it still takes like 20 mins to start please help.

Stale gas can cause this. Use a fuel stabilizer for during the season, and either run it dry at the end of the season (safer), or drain the gas out, as the other answerer advised. Just be careful handling gasoline, especially if you do it in the garage, next to a gas water heater - better yet, DON'T drain it next to the water heater.

Remove the sediment bowl on carb. take care and do not damage the gasket. Check the screw that you removed to get the bowl off, there should be a hole horizontally in the bolt and there should also be a hole vertically, clean very carefully. Replace and you should be good to go.

It's probably your coil or coil wire that's getting weak.

This could be any one or more of several causes. It sounds to me like the gas is not getting through the carburetor to the intake manifold and it takes many pulls to get enough fuel to start. To test this try some starting fluid in the air intake before you choke the unit and try to start it. If this does allow it to fire then I suggest a new carburetor and intake gasket since the problem is in that part of the mower. Another problem could be a partially obstructed air vent in the gas cap. To test that loosen the gas cap and try to start it. I suspect the problem is in the carburetor or the choke assembly and adjustments. If the problem persists, take it to the local small engine service center for a shop tune up.

It looks like you take good care of it, but here's a question. At the end of the cutting season do you drain the fuel out of the tank and empty the fuel bowl? With gasoline now containing methanol more carb problems are showing up. Under the carb there is a small brass bolt that screws the fuel bowl up to the bottom of the carb. Fuel can turn to jelly in there over the winter season. Take the air cleaner off, remove the bolt and carefully remove the fuel bowl. The needle valve will drop down with the fuel float. Cover your work area with an old towel and spray carb cleaner into the carb openings which will blow through the seat assembly cleaning it out. Clean any goo and reassemble the fuel bowl and put fresh fuel in. I use Stabile Blue now which is more reliable than the small containers you put inside the fuel cap. Add the recommended amount to your gasoline can instead with fresh fuel and it will last longer and make starting easier too.
