Any family ? If you don't need all the rooms, could you rent some out ? There's an organisation called Freecycle where people like to recycle stuff instead of dumping it, you might get some doors, carpets that way. After your taxes, heat and electric are the biggest bills -could you find a way to use less fuel ? Heavy curtains and draw them in the winter, light is cheaper to buy than heat... You don't mention food so I guess you're living pretty economically.

What do you do for a living? Can you do this for others or show them how? Some communities have work swap programs where you can find someone willing to do repairs for no labor only materials in exchange for you say doing their taxes if you were in that business. Another idea is to contact your church if you do that, maybe they have a committee that helps out parishioners in need based on ability to pay. Your county may have a similar program to improve your house. In NJ where I come from there is one loan you can apply for to improve your home with NO interest and only is repaid at the time of the sale of your home, so check in with local, county, and state programs. You are not alone in this bad economy so get your a** in gear and start finding proactive ways not costing money to get your home repaired.

If you have some spare time, I suggest you consider volunteering for your local habitat for humanity group to see if you have the knack and the desire to learn how to do this kind of work yourself. In exchange for your time, typically a weekend day whenever you have the time available, you can learn how to do a lot of these things by first doing them with the instruction of the habitat builder. Other ideas are to barter with people that can do the work, trading something you know how to do for this kind of work. Buy your materials at resale shops, most communities have at least one for building materials. And yes, quit smoking and you'll save on cigarettes and health expenses and even life insurance
