Will a filtration system take the salt out of the water from a softener?

  • Will a filtration system do to take the salt/sodium out of the water from useing a salt based water softener or does it have to be an RO system. would one like like this filter system do'? GE® Dual Stage Drinking Water Filter, GNSV70FBL I don't want to run my water bill way up and waste so much water like RO does.

  • Answer:

A water softener does not make the water salty! They use the salt to wash away the minerals that collect on resin beads. The water you use runs through a tank of resin beads. As it runs through the beads, the solids or the hardness , bonds on to the beads, letting soft water into your domestic water. After a while , the beads can not collect anymore solids, and need to be washed off. Usually at night, the softener rinses the beads with salt water to wash way the solids attached to the beads. Then rinses them completely and they start collecting solids again. You never have salt in the domestic water. Lot's of people think soft water is salty, untrue!
