How can I fix my angled e/s brush? The bristles are splayed?

Purdy brush and comb, black china bristles, what is the care, life and maintenance of this brush?

  • I need to paint metal trim around balcony door wiindows (sliding glass doors) they are huge, 4 of them in a row, takes up the entire wall. I am using oil based metal paint called Tremclad in dark brown. I have sanded and applied the first coat. Should I sand lightly now? If so what grit? I am about to do the second coat. I went out and bought a new brush just to be on the safe side because I want a very smooth finish, the other one I was using was an old nylon brush, I was having trouble with it leaving brush marks so I thinned out the paint and did a very thin coat so I was able to carry on. Now that I need to do a second what is the best way to proceed, I also purchased penetrol and a comb but not a spinner, do I really need one? I do not have linseed oil but will get some, how often would I apply it and when. How many years can my brush last if I take care of it? Anything I'm missing?

  • Answer:

buying a black china bristle was a good choice, however you did not need to thin the paint, thinning the paint breaks down the paint, when applying the paint do not continue to go over it, oil paint will run back together so it will not leave brush marks, sanding between coats is a good idea, only with very fine sand paper and very lightly only to remove any debris and to slightly dull. Cleaning of your brush should be with a comb and lineseed oil or turptine, after combing and cleaning, you can put a good hair conditioner in the brush to keep the brush suptle. Between coats you can put the brush wraped in foil or plastic in the freezer and remove when you ned to paint again.

One thing to add to previous answers. when you clean your brush even after you use thinner we found that srtaight Wisk laundry cleaner will take more paint out of the brush than thinner alone. After washing the brush with thinner put some wisk in a small can and push the brush down into the Wisk. When your sure all the paint is out rinse with water. instead of taking all the water out of the brush straighten the bristles and let it stay out over night. the bristles will air dry and be perfectly straight. then wrap in the cardboard or newspaper keeping the bristles as straight as possible. We have brushes 30 yrs old that are still in great condition. Linseed oil is a good way to thin oil paint if you need to but only if the paint is getting hard to spread. Pour a small amount of paint in a coffee can instead of working from thegallon can.

Use 220 grit sandpaper between applications. A Purdy will last for years if you clean it properly and store it in it's cardboard "keeper" (the package it came in). That'll keep the bristles from spreading.
