Can you change water pressure in your home?
-
We recently bought a house and in the inspection it said poor water pressure is both bathrooms. Is there anyway to change that? The house has 2 fulls baths but only a 40 gal tank. Is it pretty easy to swap out the 40 gal for something larger? Also if we were to get a larger one would that help the water pressure?

Answer:
Check pressure reducing valve if applicable. Screen could be partially obstructed or unit could be faulty. There is an adjustment screw on prv that will change pressure.

A larger tank will have no noticable effect but raising it up a couple of feet will improve anything fed from the tanks,it will make no difference to the water coming into the house.

it's possible that you may be able to increase your water pressure unless the water pressure in the water lines in your neighborhood are low also. Also, it's POSSIBLE that you may have a water pressure reducer valve on the water line in your home. If so, the water pressure could be increased if it has been lowered at that valve. If you have one, it should be just inside your house, where the water service line comes in (Like, just inside the garage wall) It's kind of "bell-shaped". I'ts easy enough to swap out a 40 gallon water heater to say a 50 gallon tank, as long as you have the room for the larger tank. Sometimes this is a problem. Now-a-days, For a larger-sized homes, a 50 gallon water heater is pretty normal but, putting in a larger water heater won't improve your water pressure.

Have your favourite fella/handyman turn off cold water inlet valve to hot water tank. Turn off electrical power source or gas valve. Drain about 5 gallons from drain connection at bottom of tank. Have the handyman cut (using a copper tube cutter the 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch hot water supply line about two inches above the tank connection. Move the copper line slightly out of the way so he can see the open copper stub pipe opening. He can now stick a screwdriver (a flat blade works best here or a philips or robertson if need be) and ram it into the pipe's open end, into the tank past the connection. Hot water tanks (as this appears to be a common ailment) often get plugged up with mineral salts in the water as they come out of suspension at this junction where steel tank fitting meets copper pipe. Generally, its a very hard residue and it restricts the internal diameter where pressure is the first condition as to its presence. By routing around with the screwdriver the salts break off back into the tank and the line will be free to pass the volume it is capable of. At this point, with a correct sized copper coupler, sandpaper, soldering flux paste and propane torch, he can re-assemble the copper line. Open cold water inlet to let water fill tank. Make sure drain is closed. Check for leaks. Open one hot water faucet until water issues out fully for about a minute. Turn off hot water faucet. Reestablish electrical or gas fuel source, light pilot as necessary. Your pressure and volume should be better. Most residential pressure is regulated by inlet lines and feed from utility. Doubtful you can change but this has be addressed by other answers already. Hope this helps

If you have an old house in an old area and have galvanized piped water service (just like I do), accretions build up in the galvanized pipes slowing down the water pressure. If you were to change the pipes in your house you would probably get better pressure. It would be an expensive & extensive job unless you feel like ripping down your walls which are probably plaster just like mine. However my hot water pressure does seem to be higher than the cold water pressure.

You can change the water pressure by installing a pump. Look on salamander web site for pumps, they have a range of pumps to suit different needs. The tank in the loft will prob need replacing with a larger tank as you don't want the tank to run dry. You can either have just the shower/bath,for example, pumped, which would mean a single feed from your cold water tank and a single feed from your hot water cylinder, or the whole house pumped. Whatever you choose, you need to check the technical details to ensure the water tank is the correct capacity for the pump to operate without running dry. I am a plumber/heating engineer by the way! P.s, you can not pump mains water, that is illegal. You will need to increase the size of your water tank. I would not suggest you DIY this! The cold water tank will need to be supported accordingly and the litres per minute from your shower/bath will need to be in consideration Hope this helps X

Id leave the 40 gallon water heater going bigger will just increase you power or gas bill being there will be extra water to heat. If you have galvanized pipes its likely there your problem. If you have them best thing to do is replace with copper or pex. Some people try to run something threw the pipes to open up. But your asking for bigger problems doing that. If you have well the bladder in your tank could be low or busted. Theres a valve on tank if you push valve in an water comes out the bladders busted an tank needs to be replaced. If air preassure us low ad pressure tank is rated for.

A larger hot water tank won't help your water pressure. What you can do about your water pressure depends on why the pressure is low. If you have well water, consult with a well maintenance company. If you have city water... start by chatting with your neighbors, and find out what their experiences are.
