Is treated or untreated plywood more acoustically dead?

I have a wood basement. Should i water seal the exposed treated plywood?

  • there's 12-18 in. of the plywood exposed (between the ground and the siding) would using tom sons water sealer help the wood ?

  • Answer:

There are two issues where wood is in contact with the ground as is the case with a wood foundation. The first problem is water and the second is pests like termites and carpenter ants that will feed off of the wood. Wood foundations have to be made of some kind of treated wood. But all treated wood is not made equally. I have seen situations where pressure treated wood has failed. But waterproofing the wood from the outside above ground level may not help if this is the only way that below ground water is escaping from the wood. It may retard evaporation. Overhangs, gutters, and a ground pitched away from the foundation will all help to keep the foundation dry and keep termites disinterested. Additionally, you may consider some preventative treatment against termites. Bait and traps may be placed by a professional exterminator but you may be able to purchase the needed supplies and apply them yourself.
