What to do when you are frustrated and have no creative outlet?

How can I create a new 110 electrical outlet from an existing 220 outlet?

  • I am installing an under-the-counter microwave. I want a 110 outlet installed in the cabinet to hide the microwave cord. There is the 220 outlet down below where the stove plugs in. Is there a way to run off that 220 outlet and create a new 110 outlet in the cabinet so that both the stove and microwave will work? There is absolutely no attic, how can I accomplish this without damaging the existing wall if it is even possible. There is no other outlet available. The stove and microwave are on a small section of wall with open doorways on both sides.

  • Answer:

you should run a new circuit from your power supply...this would be the safest way.....if you do this and are using your stove and microwave you will end up causing the stove breaker to kick out alot especially if you are using the oven and burners

It can be done. But tapping off the 220v. outlet with a 110v. is against the Code. Because the 110v. circuit should be on a 20 amp breaker. The 220v. outlet is on a 30 amp breaker. If there is a problem with the 110v. circuit the 30 amp breaker won't trip and you could have a fire. Be safe and call an electrician and have them wire the plug.

you can but it is illegal, 220 is made from to 115 volt legs with a common. if you split the legs you will have no protection. You asked this before, are waiting to here the answer you want. Don't do it

By code microwaves are supposed to be on a dedicated 20 amp circuit. Never tap into a 240 circuit to get 120 from. You dont want to run the risk of a fire do yah?

it can be done but probably shouldn't be. ask your self this question. is that outlet worth burning my house down over ??? please don't do this when in doubt call a electrician and be sure.

thank God M2fast said buy a transformer cuz I was afraid someone was gonna tell you to use the ground wire as a neutral. Can you install conduit on the outside of the house from the panel to a place where you can get inside of a cabinet where you can conceal the wiring to where the micorwave is installed? I know it's alot of work, but if you don't have the attic space.....and btw....even if you did have the attic space, you probably wouldn't be able to get to where the panel is anyways......hey.....don't you need to install some recepts for Christmas lighting????? You could always pull in a circuit for the microwave with the Christmas lights circuit around your house? Just make sure and use some silicone to seal the hole you make into the house so no bugs get in too.

More than likely not recommended. That 220v range plug is protected by a 30 to 40 amp breaker (I'm guessing). Even if you can do 120 and you have a major short circuit the 30 or 40 amp breaker may not trip and you could have a fire. run a seperate line using 14 guage wire. A 15 amp breaker is the max allowable for 14 guage wire.

I doubt that you can do what you want by wiring but have you checked into a step down transformer? You may be able to extend the 220 wiring to a new outlet for the microwave and then step it down to 110 using a plug in transformer such as we Americans use when traveling to allow us to use our appliances in Europe

i don't have any knowledge in this department. but here's what google spat out: http://boards.diynetwork.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/9221916776/m/1971045133

Nope. You need to run a new circuit for the microwave. You can't tap off the 240 volt receptacle because it is fed with a 50 amp breaker and the wire to the microwave will be 20 amp wire. That is a code violation and more work for the fire fighters. Fish a wire up or down inside that wall. Or hire an electrician to do it. Forget the transformer idea too. One of the dumber answers I've seen here. And no, you can't put a fused disconnect in that location to protect the 20 amp wires, that is another code and safety issue. Just do it right, or hire someone to do it right.
