What's the cheapest/simplest/quickest way of fixing holes in the wall?
-
I just bought myself a new house & when I moved in, I notice several holes in the wall of the living room. I didn't spot this before when I was viewing the property as this was covered by the previous owner's giant plasma tv screen & fireplace. Now that she's taken them away with her, I'm left with a massive hole where the fireplace use to be (big enough to stick your head in) & a smaller hole where the tv cables use to be. There's a B&Q & Homebase nearby that i can go to, but not sure what to get. I can't afford nor have the patience to knock the whole thing down to rebuild it brick by brick, followed by plastering, followed by sanding, followed by painting & more painting! So can anyone suggest just a simple & quick way of just covering them up?

Answer:
The best way is depends the size of the hole in the wall and if it is pretty large then you can place a large flexable piece of cardboard and tie a strong string in the center of the cardboard and try to squeeze the card board make sure the card board is flexable as after the card board is inside the wall pull on the string tightly as you place plaster and hold their approxinmately 20 to 30 minutes until somewhat dry. Then firmly sand off the excessive dry plaster and wipe it with a luke warm water damp sponge until dry and place a finish on the wall and paint and it is as good as new.

Ok, I had to fill some large rectangular holes where warm air central heating ducts had been. Obviously you'll be able to get your hand inside the wall so it should be easier for you. First thing to do is to make the shape of the large hole as square as you can. Then you need to fix a framework of wood to the 4 sides of the hole (behind the hole). Do this by glue and screws. Leave about 1 inch of wood showing past the hole all around. Cut plasterboard as close to the shape as you can. Glue and screw it to the wood framework. Fill any gaps around the edges with plaster. Go over the whole surface with Polyskim. The smaller hole you could just fill with plaster then skim over, again with the Polyskim. There's no simple and quick way if you want to do a decent job.

Well the simplest solution would be to buy a plasma TV. Failing that, cut a piece of plasterboard to fit the big hole and fix it in place with wooden blocks nailed into the sides of the hole. Then tidy it up with plaster or vinyl filler. The smaller hole will probably fill with plaster. If it's too big, mix up some sand and cement, soak a lump of screwed up paper in it and shove that in the hole and cement over it. When the cement has dried, tidy up with plaster or filler.

Is it possible to fix some plaster board or ply wood over the hole and then plaster over that? That should'nt cost too much.you may want to stuff the whole with newspaper first though for a bit of insulation.
