How can I resolve my problems with Sears and or Kenmore?
-
Here is the unbelievable story. My husband and I purchased a Kenmore stackable washer and dryer about 5 years ago. We also purchased a Kenmore stainless steel side by side fridge 5 years ago, Kenmore stainless steel glass top range 2 years ago and Frigidaire stainless steel dishwasher 2 years ago. The first thing to go out was our washing machine. We called a repair person out who wanted around $300 to repair it. That was 6 months ago. Since January 1, 2010 all of our other appliances have broken. Next was the fridge our ice maker stopped working. Not a big deal, but we did enjoy our automatic ice maker. My husband noticed water on the floor and after investigation realized our fridge was also leaking. In fact it had gone unnoticed for sometime and leaked under our new pergo floors. Which of course we had to tear out. Within this week our dishwasher started leaking, our dryer only blows cold air, and now our oven won't turn on. The range top still works, but our oven and broiler are out. I have contacted Sears, which is where we purchased our items, and they said they would repair our appliances, but that we had to pay a service fee and parts. Can anyone think of anything we can do? It does not feel right for us to repair all of these items as they are top of the line and new. Any help would be very appreciated!

Answer:
Kenmore is a branded name used exclusively by Sears, just like Craftsman tools. There is no Kenmore company per say. On all of Sears branded products you will find a model number, which will begin with 3 digits, followed by a period and 5 to 8 more digits. The first 3 digits is the source code. That is the code that denotes who the manufacturer is. The next 5 digits is the stock number used by the retail store. The last 3 digits, if there are 8, are revision changes. Here is a list of the source codes http://professional-power-tool-guide.com/manufacturers/craftsman-power-tool-company/sears-and-craftsman-source-product-code/ Being as they are all Kenmore, I'm going to say your probably stuck going through Sears to get this addressed. This is one of the reasons why they try to sell you a maintenance contract when you purchase the items. I myself, never purchase them, but I was also a Sears service tech for many years so it would be foolish for me to pay for that. I will say that is an incredibly unfortunate story, and that Kenmore appliances aren't usually quite so troublesome. My best advice to you is.. Squeeky wheel gets the grease. Call the store and be a squeeky wheel. I've seen them do some unbelievable things for customers... noisy customers.. if you get my drift. By the way, the fancier the appliance, the more troublesome it is. The no frills appliances are the ones that never break.

Since all of your Sears appliances broke at once, I would call your local news consumer reporter, television preferably or newspaper, if you have one. This seems like an interesting story for a consumer reporter. The last thing Sears wants is bad publicity. You could just threaten to call one of these reporters. Another way is to call the corporate headquarters and speak to someone there. The higher up you go, the better . Good luck.

Well the bad part is that they will repair them for a price! I have learned in buying large ticket items is doing your research and knowing the company's reputation. Kenmore is a reputable Company but sears has been known to screw people over on there service. Without a extended warranty plan it looks like its time to purchase these items all over again!!

call kenmore...our washer went out about four or five months ago..it was about five years old...i called maytag...found out it was under warranty..i had to pay the labor but it was 45 bucks..versus 1500 for a new washer....you cant ever tell you may be able to work something out with them and it never hurts to try

Wow that's a run of bad luck for sure! I would check the paperwork that came with your appliances and see what the warranty is on each one. Bypass Sears and call Kenmore, they have quality stuff and probably won't like to hear all the appliances took a dump on you. Make sure you mention the damage to your floor, see if you get a positive response. Be patient when dealing with big companies, sometimes it can take a long time to get to someone that can help you. Good luck :)

A lot of your stuff might be made by Whirlpool. Try them.As to your icemaker problem (leaking water), many icemakers get stuck on the water refill cycle because of ice buildup in the icemaker. Mine has done it twice and there is nothing wrong with the thing. Both times I had gallons of water to clean up. You can buy small water detectors that use a 9V battery. They are less than $20 and an alarm sounds when water on the floor is detected. I have rigged mine to shut the water off to the icemaker if the alarm goes off, but that might be too involved for you.
