How do I get rid of mice in our cars?
-
Since the cornfields have been cut we have had mice get in our cars. I made sure there was no food in them, but they still get in. I mean, it got so bad that I opened my glove compartment and THREE were in there and had made a nest out of napkins. I tried those little humane boxes and caught none. So, I put my cats in and they just freaked out. So last night we put snap traps with peanut butter and this am all bait is gone with traps still set. I don't think the mice are heavy enough? They are little deer mice. I do not want poison as they will die and stink. I hate the idea of glue traps but do they work? They have freaking chewed through wiring in my new Jeep. I am an animal lover, but something has to stop.

Answer:
Glue traps do work, but I hate them too. The problem with the snap traps is that you have to adjust the little strip where you put the peanut butter so that the trap is much more sensitive and springs more easily. You have to bend the metal a little. Also put just the tiniest amount of peanut butter in the little opening so that it is harder to get at.

Don't panic! The glue traps work but only once so you may need a bunch of them. Also, the mice will be alive when you catch them so be prepared. Don't give up on conventional traps. Use smooth peanut butter and press it well into the metal pin. Don't use too much. Reset them as often as possible. Place some in trunk and in engine compartment. I would put some under the seats. Use at least 10 traps at the same time.

When mice are poisoned, they get extremely dehydrated and search for water, so they won't stink up your car they will leave to try to find water.

I hear peppermint works well, they hate the smell of it. You could use peppermint oil, dried peppermint or fresh.

Try the moth balls. If that doesn't work antifreeze to drink will. Make sure DD and pets don't get into it though.

Try peppermint. The Flavoring for candy or cooking. My mom puts that in her camper over the winter and it seems to help.

You can get mouse and rat bait anywhere from grocery stores to hardware stores. Place it in the car where kids and pets can't get to it. Be sure to put some in the trunk and under the hood somewhere. The rodents eat the bait and it makes them very thirsty. If there's not liquid in the area they have to go out for a drink. When they drink is when the poison works and they die outside, not in the car. They're probably coming into the car because it's secure and warm. Just keep up the bait thing for a while and they'll slack off and eventually stay away.
