How to fix Camaro's roof?

Is there an easy way to fix a leaky chimney base on the roof?

  • The chimney is brick, with a metal wrap at the roof, and is mainly in the garage.I can only do small repairs due to a car accident not yet recovered,so hammering down tarp with boards, etc,is out of the question.Could I use a sealant? If so,what kind? This is just a temporary fix until I can have the roof replaced,it's very wet out here in winters. It's ruining my woodstove insert .

  • Answer:

Had the same problem 2 months back- Buy a can of tar (In the same can as a paint can) Tar the spots that are needed. We did, and not one leak.

You can get a black roofing sealant by DAP at your local hardware store. It comes in 35# or 5# pails and you can also get it in a tube that fits in a caulking gun.

you can use wet/dry roof tar to put around the flashing and the brick, but it will stain the brick and not come back out

At home Depot they sell sealant is a tube to be used with a caulking gun. It can be applied when wet. Have someone take care of it for you. Sounds like your flashing has a leak at the chimney. Good luck

Duct tape and rain resistant material (tarp, raincoat, that tarp that's hiding the rusty car buried underneath the snow)...also...the rain will run "downhill" (just kidding...but an important point...so use duct tape and rain resistant tarp material to "divert" the water around the chimney stack...you know...the highest point uphill side of the chimney...create a "water redirection" around the chimney stack...like causing a river to diverge into two different directions around the chimney... If you going to go up there...make sure you don't slip on the icy rooftop...I enjoy your questions and answers and don't want you to get hurt...the best thing to do, though, is to get some guy you can charm into going up there and trying to fix the problem, but someone who, if THEY get injured, you'll suffer no guilt about it... (If I was there...I could help you...but that would involve you (afterwards) wearing a skimpy silk outfit, and a very "Madonna" attitude...)

Flashing sounds like it may be the problem. You can buy some roof sealants that are pour-on types and might be a good temporary fix.

Have you inspected it closely..Perhaps the moisture is just coming in around the flashing..if so any good silicone or roof sealant should do the job. The flashing should be under the topside shingles & be water-tight to the chimney..

pick up some tar then build a fire in your grill and set the tar on it till the lid pops open then remove the lid and stir wen it is good and smooth take it to the roof and pour it on and spread it out and up the chimney then before it hardens take some cloth and press it onto the tar this will strengthen the tar like the cord in duck tape

Use black fibrated trowel on type asphaltic roof mastic. Trowel it on several inches above and over the metal flashing down to and onto the roof a foot or so. Really put it on thick. It will make a gooey mess that water will not get through. Go to a hardware store and tell them what you need. They will point you to the right products.
