Normally, for most places in Canada, planting etc., comes after Victoria Day. So, you have a good month of planning and preparation time. You should not plant before all risk of frost is gone. I cannot remember the date for that in Calgary, but I expect it will be some time in May. You can start many plants inside though, which will give you a jump on the season. I suggest joining a garden club there -you will get lots of advice, and you can even trade plants with others. Have fun!

I recommend you buy a potted flower first..and then potted vegetable... Next year try seeding, I think you're a bit late (I can't tell I'm in Florida)

No you are not late. In fact it is a bit early to plant most vegetables or annuals outside in Calgary. You can start with some seeds planted in pots indoors, vegetable or flowers, and they will be nice sized when you are ready to set them out after the last frost. There are dozens of gardening sites online. Spend a little time reading up on methods and tips from other gardeners.
