  • Answer:

herbs are very easy to grow. grow what you like to cook with. My wife has a garden with sage, lavender, thyme, rosemary, chives, garlic, lemon grass and many other things. She buys the small plants at the nursery and some survive year to year, other (like the rosemary I think) she brings inside during the winter and it looks okay. Tastes good too. starting with seeds is hard. When you buy plants, there is this tag on them that tells how to water and what types of light they need. My wife just keeps them on pots on the deck. Look good in the summer and I like to pick out a few when barbecuing steak or chicken to see what tastes good. Also good on vegetables, like zuccini.

Easiest way to grow anything from seed is to plant directly in the ground, herbs want full sun. http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=grow+herbs+from+seed&fr=ush-ans

My local home depot has a herb growing starter kit. It has a tray that looks kind of like an ice cube tray, a package of seeds, and instructions. It's designed to "start" the herbs growing indoors. Once they are large enough you'll have to transplant them to either larger pots or outdoors. There are other options as well, but I liked that one.

Most herbs are easy to grow whether outdoors or indoors on a windowsill. Garden supply stores sell kits that have everything you need: seeds, pots, growing medium and complete instructions. Grow whatever you like to use in cooking or making teas and tonics. If you have a cat try catnip.

herbs are really easy to grow the more hardy ones like thyme and rosemary require very little upkeep. Some of the softer ones like basil are a bit more tricky to grow but if you buy a plant and get it in the ground you can learn as you go! good luck : )

Mint is great for starting with. Comes back every year. takes very little care.

All herbs will perform better in the ground rather than in pots, and most need a good amount (5hrs+) of direct sunlight. I do not recommend seeds for beginners. Herb seed can be very spotty and that can discourage beginners. Picking plants from a store is fine. To that point, do not buy anything that is flowering or has more than a couple of yellowed stems or leaves. If you can, ease the plant out of its little pot and examine the roots. If you see a mass of thin, white roots, you have a good plant no matter what the leaves/top of the plant looks like. If you have nothing but soggy yellowed roots (or if you see no roots), don't buy it. Soil demands are minimal for herbs, but they still need good drainage. If you have a heavy clay soil, plant on blending in coir or compost (any kind) into the spots you want to plant. Otherwise, amending the soil is probably not necessary. Other points: Place them so they can get AM sunlight if possible; the earlier the better. Coriander can tolerate some shade and cool, so it can go in the ground much sooner than basil.
