Can I grow an orchid from seed and how long would it take?

How long does it take for an Orchid Seed to grow?

  • I just got some orchid seeds for Christmas. My friend says it takes about 2 years for the seed to start showing progress. She sounded kind of like she is just joking when she told me. So I wondered. 1.) How would you Plant the Seed? Just put it on a Bark of wood? or plant in regular soil? 2.) How long would it take for the seed to start showing me progress? I planted it for 3 Days now. Any tips or answers would help out a lot! thanks.

I don't think it takes 2 years, but I do think it takes a while. Orchids are difficult to grow from seed. You cant just put them in the ground and let them grow, like most plants. They either require a special kind of fungus, or completly sterile conditions with some sugar in the soil, or something like that. You should research it. I think they also need a cold dormant period to simulate winter. You would probably need to keep them in the refrigerator for a few months first.

Over the next 3 to 12 months, the pods will form. When the pod is ripe, it will turn yellow or brown before splitting and dispersing the seed. This seed is the next generation for our orchid.Examples are beans, peas, corn, tomatoes and lettuce, all the seeds you see at your local nursery or produce store. Orchid seed, in comparison, is tiny, like dust. It contains virtually no nutrition to grow the new plant, so orchid seed relies on a mycorrhizal fungus to provide the nutrition required to grow. Until the young orchid grows leaves and roots large enough to support the orchid, the fungus must provide all the nutrition for the growing plant. Without this fungus, there is no possibility of the seed developing. Now, back to how to grow your seed. If you just put your seed in a pot and water, it will not grow without the required fungus. Early orchid growers had little success growing orchids from seed due to this problem. They found to have any chance of success, the seed should be sown on the mother pot around the roots of the parent plant. Here, the potting media will be moist due to normal watering of the pot and will also contain suitable mycorrhizal fungus from the parent plant. Many species will grow using this method. The seedlings will then take another 2 to 10 years or more, depending on the species, before they are large enough to flower, most common species taking around 2 or 3 years.
