What website gives plant identification?

  • I'm doing a project about plants, and I have to pick 10 of them out and find the names of them. I decided to pick outta my mom's garden, but she doesn't remember the names of them. I tried a few library books and I got a few of the plants. I went on website where there were tons of lists of plants and hard to tell pictures of plant online. Is there any easy, good websites helpful for plant identification?

    Without flowers to help with identification, you have a project. I hardly suggest the on-line catalogs, so a web search for more. For woody plants, try this: http://classes.hortla.wsu.edu/hort232/ It's a college plant id course. Granted it is for a limited area but it might help you.....or at least spur you on to more creative web searches. Yes, there are many books that will help you, but they are books......not web sites. You need some skill to use a vegetative plant identification key.......verbal description of the plant based on plant physiology. If you have a camera, we are here to help.

People here are very good at identifying plants. You'll need to take some photos and upload them to Flickr, photobucket or similar site, then post the links here on YA. For ease of identification, we need close up of any flowers, a close up of the leaves and a pic of the whole plant showing branch structure and leaf placement. It is also helpful to know your location or gardening zone.

You can usually find out a lot about plant identification from some of the seed and nursery companies. They are online websites for ordering either seed or plants. Two that come to mind right now are Burpee Seed .com and Springhill nursery.com. They give both names, pictures and how and when to plant them.
