Where can I buy a decibel meter in Chicago?

Redwood City, CA Noise Ordinance?

  • I am having a terrible time working with my neighbor on noise coming from her apartment. She is constantly playing music. About a year and a half ago, she thought it would be a good idea to buy a surround sound system. Now all I hear is "boom" "boom" Boom" coming from her base. I have tried politely talking with her, I've tried the property manager, everything short of calling the police. She doesn't get it. I want to by a decibel meter and show her my readings so she gets the picture. Any time I invite her to listen to the noise in my apartment, she refuses. She thinks she can listen to her music whenever she wants and I should just deal with it b/c it's an older apartment building. I'm disparately trying to find the noise ordinance for redwood city, ca that simply says: during the day, noise should be kept at x decibels and during the night it should be kept at x decibels. PLEASE HELP!

    Here it is: Redwood City (Ord. No. 1999, § 1, 7-24-89) LOCAL AMBIENT: The lowest sound level repeating itself during a six-minute period as measured with a precision sound-level meter, using slow response and A-level weighting. The minimum sound level shall be determined with the noise source at issue silent and in the same location as the measurement of the noise level of the source or sources at issue. However, for purposes of this Chapter, in no case shall the local ambient be considered or determined to be less than: 1. Thirty (30) dBA for interior noise in Section 24.20B; 2. Forty (40) dBA in all other sections. WARNING--YOU MAY BE CITED FOR A VIOLATION OF THE REDWOOD CITY NOISE REGULATIONS AND UPON CONVICTION THEREOF BE LIABLE FOR ALL COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH POLICE RESPONSE The noise ordinance is applicable from 8pm to 8am. All you need to do is go to your City Hall's Inspection Department and talk with an inspector about this. He/she will tell you what you need to do and in some cities will handle this for you. I'm sorry to tell you that this type of person cannot be reasoned with. And even though a professional will talk with her and give her a warning, she will continue to play this music. You might have to move. This is often the case.
