Multi Trunked Maple Tree?
-
Hey, I was just wondering. How do I create a Multi Trunked Maple Tree. I have a 5 trunked Silver Maple in my backyard next to my patio. I was thinking of cloning this tree to make another one like it. How do I create a new Multi Trunked Maple tree? I don't mean as a bonsai form. I mean just one to grow in a pot. Also, can you grow Multi Trunked Trees by planting more then one tree close to each other?

Answer:
Know why multiple trunk trees are pretty rare outside of a forest left to its own devices or the yard of someone who has neglected the landscaping for 20 years?? Because they are undesirable as specimen trees.... and a GIGANTIC liability issue to the owner. Maple trees are famous for splitting and dropping HUGE branches. They have this problem because they can look just fine... when the entire middle of the tree has rotted. And you are trying to maximize the number of crotches in the tree....maximizing the number of places where damage can occur, rot can begin.... and where gravity and wind will be applying some tremendous forces. Some trees DO have multiple trunk forms that are desirable. Maples are not one of them. Save yourself 30 years of wasted time... or a huge problem for future owners... think again about that idea.... and then DON'T.

I would reconsider doing that as trees have a habit of spiting down the middle when they have multiple trunks. Maple trees get BIG and the weight all located on one side due to the other trunk and it's limbs off balances that side of the tree. Nice wind storm comes along and one or both of them can come down. If you've got the room may I suggest you plant a grove of Pink Dogwood trees such that you can have a place for a bench/swing and be secluded from view. Don't trim the lower limbs as the trees grown and you will have a nice little hide-away for sitting and re-lacking.....

Hi Tim, This is Ricks Picks. Happy New Year and thank you for your question. I work in the Garden Department for The Home Depot. From your description, it sounds like you already have a full grown maple tree in your yard and you want to start another one. One of the ways to do this is taking a cutting of the existing maple tree and using a “Root Tone” or a “Rooting Hormone” to start some new growth. Another way, using the same rooting hormone powder, is to select a branch on your existing tree, something not too big, say, about ¼ to ½ inch in diameter. Prepare the branch by coating a 1inch to 2 inch area of the branch with the rooting hormone powder. Be sure to make the surface area of the branch damp so that the powder will stick to it. Once the branch has been coated, use some dampened sphagnum moss along with some type of nylon mesh netting which will be used to hold the moss up next to the branch. Secure the nylon mesh and the moss with some garden stretch ties. The stretch ties will allow for branch expansion. Do this to several braches to increase your success. Once the moss has been secured, use some tin foil or clear stretch wrap to cover the nylon wrap and the sphagnum moss. Be sure to poke holes in the top of the foil or stretch wrap to allow for ventilation. Depending on your weather, it will be necessary to water the wrap periodically to keep the moss damp. Patience is the order here. Remember, you cannot rush Mother Nature. She has her own time table. Be sure to select branches that will be easy to access so that you can check the potential new growth. Once you see some root growth, you can now cut of the selected branch and plant it! Use a smaller one gallon nursery pot along with a good potting mix that which has perlite in it. This way, you will be able to place your new trees in a bigger pot and have your desired multi-trunk maple tree. This is how many of the nurseries propagate their trees. It is a much safer way of propagation as opposed to taking a cutting from the tree, putting the rooting hormone on it, and placing it in your potting mix and hoping that it takes root. To answer the second part of your question, yes you can plant the trees close together to form a multi trunked tree. It will not be as dramatic in the pot as it is in the ground but it can be done. Be sure to take some pictures of your project and share them with the rest of the garden enthusiast here on Yahoo Answers. This has been another of, Ricks Picks
