How To Grow Mushrooms?

How to grow mushrooms?

  • I assembled a wooden shed behind my home to grow mushrooms. I was told to use hummus soil and manure in wooden boxes. I have also bought 2 books on the subject. Now that it's Fall, would the weather make a difference in the growth of mushrooms. Plan to grow portebella, shitake, and buttons mushrooms to start. Need some suggestions.

  • Answer:

For anyone wanting to grow any mushroom you should read two books. "The Mushroom Cultivator" and "Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms" both by Paul Stamets. The Portabella and button mushrooms are the most difficult mushrooms to grow. The mushrooms that grow on stumps and logs are the easiest, like Shitake and Oyster Mushrooms (similar in size to Portta's, but much tastier). Shitake and Oysters will bloom in spring if inoculated now. You can get spore plugs for inoculating at Fungi Perfecti. RScott
