What are some good/basic types of seeds?

How do i collect the seeds from all types of greens?

  • I have turnips greens, broad leaf, rape, tender, curly mustard. How would i collect the seeds from all types of greens?

  • Answer:

It's easy. You must be warned however that they do get crossed or hybrid and your resulting greens may not be the eating results you want 1. Let the plants bolt or go to flower the mustards and radish flowers will resemble little crosses in an airy cluster of blooms. Lettuce flowers look and act like little dandelions only smaller. Step 1 Cut a 4-inch section from the toe end of one leg of a pair of pantyhose or nylon stocking. Step 2 Allow the lettuce to "bolt," or send up a flower head. Stop harvesting the lettuce and wait for the plant to send up a stalk, upon which buds and eventually a flower will form. Step 3 Slip the piece of stocking around the flower head as soon as the flowers begin to fade. Take care not to break the flower stalk, but tie the stocking securely with the string so it won't be blown away by the wind. Step 4 Leave the stocking in place until the flower has completely withered and the seeds have collected in the stocking. Cut off the stalk, with the stocking still in place, with a pair of scissors. Step 5 Lay the stalk with the stocking attached in a shallow bowl or tray. Cut open the stocking with scissors and carefully shake out the seed. Discard the stalk and the stocking. Pick out any chaff still clinging to the seed. Step 6 Hold the bowl or tray over a paper envelope and gently tap the seeds into the envelope. Label the envelope with the date collected and type of seed. Radish seeds form pods that look like pointed skinny string been pods that turns brown and papery when they dry out and turn brown or black harvest them and break the pods open.

When the plant is done producing, it will "go to seed". Wait for the seeds to become fully formed and somewhat dry, then take them off the plant. I have good luck cutting the whole stem holding the seeds rather than trying to gather individual seeds. Lay them out on a paper towel so they dry completely, then put them in envelopes and store in a dry, dark place.

You have to let the growing plants go to seed, and collect the seeds from the seed heads. The leaves do not produce seed. All of these have seed heads that look sort of like stringy, thin broccoli. Mustard plant, flower and seed: http://abbamoses.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/brassica-nigra.jpg

Most plants will go to seed at the end of their growing cycle. Pick the seeds and let them dry for the next growing season.
