Why do these large black spiders keep walking into my pool?
-
I live in South Texas on Corpus Christi Bay. These huge hairy black spiders walk into the pool at night, and are still alive walking around 24 hours later on the bottom of the pool. This morning I found 5 large ones in the pool. Last summer I found 27 in one month. They rear up on their hind legs and try to attack us after we take them out of the pool. They have urticating hairs on their legs -- like tarantulas -- but are smaller. The abdomen is about the size of a quarter. I assume the males are wandering at night looking for a mate. I can't find where they are coming from -- have dug extensively in a garden near the pool after seeing them but have never seen them in the ground. What can I do? They are freaking me out! Where could they have their nest and why do they like my pool?

Answer:
I dunno what kind they are, but i know that you gotta be careful because the hairs on their legs actually trap air and it allows them to survive for a long time under there. They can and prolly will bite you if they get the chance.

They are indeed small male tarantulas out looking for mates under cover of darkness. They have a lousy sense of direction and are not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but can hold enough air in their itty-bitty book lungs to survive for awhile under water. Keep fishing them out, they may not show it but they appreciate the effort :-)
