What is a good book on edible wild plants?

Can anyone recommend a book for identifying plants?

  • I've just moved to a house with a garden and I know nothing about gardening. The first step is to identify the plants. Can anyone recommend a book with good illustrations that would suit a beginner?

  • Answer:

juliesmelonsbum is right, rhs plant book is the bible, but if you know nothing about plants you could spend hours browsing for one single plant. The sunset garden book is also good but the illustrations are drawings as opposed to photographs. The rhs do a book called the encyclopedia of plants and flowers and it is sectioned into climbers, shrubs etc, but not only are they grouped into flower or leaf colour but what time of year too. good luck.

almost impossible to recommend a book go to garden centres possibly with a cutting and identify it yourself as most garden centres are just shops or find a local nursery which prouces plants tom

I use The flower expert by Dr. D. G. Hessayon. It has pictures on every page and gives you all the details you wish to know. You can also buy different titles by the same author

It depends on what type of plants, a general plant id book can have lots of great pictures but not a lot of info on the plants needs. Your best bet is to stop in a book shop and browse through a few of the books on plant id. A lot of times you'll find great books on the bargain tables. Plus finding a book that you'll understand is key, some plant books give way to much detail when all you really want to know is how much light and water. My favorite book is Sunset Western Garden Book(around $25), it has a lot of helpful info for the first time gardener, you can find it on Amazon or in some Home Depots. If not that one, The Complete Garden Flower Book by Murdock Books(around $35) is great. Plus it makes a nice coffee table book. Anyway, good luck in the garden!!

I recommend that you start with a good wildflower guide(Petersons is one). The reason being is that you can learn how to identify plants not only by the flowers but leave and stem structure as well. This is important to know for any plant identification, wheather the plant is growing in the wild or the garden.

Get a general RHS book, and ask your neighbours to help you - in will give you the chance to get to know them, discussing a 'neutral' topic.
