How Do I Start Vertical Gardening?

Exactly HOW & WHEN should I start Container-gardening?

  • I visited my local LOWES today. I picked up all that I (think) I need to start container gardening. %I have: A large 3 gallon (size) container, Enough Potting Soil to fill my container (Miracle Grow Potting Mix) A few vegetable seed-pacs: (Sweet Valencia) Onions, (Red / Green) Bell Peppers and Juliet Hybrid Tomatoes. I am suggested to start my soil inside my garage to prevent freezing. - HOW should I start this container-garden? - I plan to set this outdoors after the hard-freezing-season (April 15.) Thanks for helpful suggestions. I am in the Texas panhandle.

  • Answer:

Hope you have 3 gallon containers for each of your vegies...they won't do well all crowded in the same pot. Put them outdoors after last frost, direct sow seeds in the soil, full sun.

Hello Chas You can plant your onion seeds now. For the rest, since we don't know the temp in your garage, buy a cheap thermometer with a prong on the end that will read down to 40 degrees (From cooking aisle in grocery store). Insert it in the soil in your garage and when the temp gets to 70 degrees, plant the rest. Then take it outside a week or so after April 15th starting with a few hours a day and increasing it each day until the plants are hardened off. I think you are trying to put too much into one pot but give it a whirl and see what happens. Also, you'll need water and light inside your garage either from windows or bulbs. Hope this helps Johnny

I live in So. Georgia and I planted my seeds, in the garage, the first week of Jan. I grow only heirloom tomatoes and harvest my own seeds from the previous years fruit. I do the early seed planting to see how many will germinate. The plants are moved outside in containers in mid-March or when the last freeze is forecast. I suggest you do the same. Try an heirloom such as a Cherokee Purple tomato. You will never plant another hybrid tomato. Your climate is much like ours. Plant in 5 gallon buckets or containers. Go to YouTube .com and you can learn all you need to know.
