What plants can I use in a permanant outdoor hanging basket? They have to be evergreen and hardy.?

To my knowledge there is no permanent plant for a hanging basket that stays outdoors, but if you want one to come in for the winter, it will be okay...Also, if you could let us know your location, it would help tremendously...

Winter flowering pansies immediately spring to mind, actually they will flower throughout the year and are only slightly knocked back in a very severe frost. Variegated Ivy for colourful foliage.

ivy would be my choice.

Wintering over any plants in pots is a challenge. In severe freezing zones, the Plants roots have a tendancy to dry out because the humidity is so low, and watering after the soil is frozen is difficult, obviously. Usually for success you have to put them on the ground in the shade and cover the pot with mulch to conserve the moisture, plus adding snow on top will also insulate & when it melts will water the soil.

I'm no gardener but how about a selection of ivy's? That's what i was thinking of doing.

Depend a lot in what planting region you are living! Use a good potting soil and a slow release fertilizer. Make sure you choose a plant that can be in full shade and semi-shade. A good nursery in your area can help in deciding which one is best for your space.

ferns - we have one on our balcony. As long as you remember to water it, (i dont) it'll be good.
