When do I fertilize hydrangeas?

When is the best time to fertilize Hydrangeas and with what?

  • Planted some Hydrangeas in the fall. Should I fertilize them with something soon? I want them to be beautiful! I live in Sacramento, Ca.

  • Answer:

Fertilize your Hydrangeas with a balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer in the spring around March and again in July or Aug. Don't fertilized in the fall. Plants need to rest and develop strong root systems during the winter months. Use a time release type fertilizer spread 12 inches from base of plant. Small plants 12 inches tall need 1/2 cup of fertilizer. Large mature plants 4-5 feet tall need 2-3 cups spread around the drip line of the foliage. Warning: don;t fertilize a weak plant. This can push the plant over the edge.
