Navel orange tree, sulfur smell in fruit?
-
My healthy navel orange tree produces wonderfully each year, but I have noticed that some (not most) of the ripe fruit inside have a strong sulfur smell in the navel end, without any evidence of decay. The orange smells right before it is peeled, the fruit is nice and firm, and the pith and skin are still fresh and springy. The rest of the orange segments smell ok, but the navel "plug" really stinks. Any ideas what might be causing this?

Answer:
It's just a concentration of aromatic compounds...the thiols in citrus fruits are sulfur based.

The navel often does. I Wouldnt worry about it just cut it or separate it from the rest of the fruit and throw it away.
