Seed Germination LAB: Advice Needed

• I'm starting my lab assignment. Ive chosen to test the effect of temperature on seed germination and im using radish seeds. I have my sample in three different locations: warm, cool, and room temp. Ive also made sure the three sample have no sunlight in order to control variables. But the question I have is: Even with adequate water, can radish seeds germinate with NO sunlight??? Also how long will it take for the seeds to germinate and TIPS how how to have a successful germination?

  Yes they will germinate without sunlight, but you will loose the plant very quickly after sprouting. I don't know if that will make a difference to you. You've picked a seed with an extremely large variance in germinating temperature. Anywhere from 45 to 85 degrees F will germinate the seed. I've had them germinate as fast as 48 hrs. at 75 degrees. Another way you could test germination is to place the seed between layers of damp paper towels, you can check them more easily that way, and you eliminate the variables in the soil mix. Since radishes are so easy, you may even need to make hourly checks. Be sure to allow a certain seed failure percentage for sterile seed.
