How do I know what planting zone I am in?

Spring garden planting in 3 months?

  • For history class, we have an assignment to make a 3 x 4 ft raised garden box (Its supposed to be imitating the victory gardens of WWI). We (I have one other partner) each have to produce at least two fruits, vegetables, or herbs. We are planting the last week of February and they must be ready for harvest by end of may/early June, since we're having a 'feast'. I don't know what to plant that will grow well in Zone 9 and be ready in the 3 months. Help? Please include sources if you have them...

  • Answer:

You need to pick things that do well in cool weather. May I suggest spinach and radishes. You will be well on the way to a tasty salad. Good Luck.

Radish grows well and takes only about 30days give or take. Up north your cabbage grows well. most of your fruits will not. Rule of thumb for tomatoes that my family used is not until after easter. Although now that I moved to AZ (tucson) I have tomato's on the vine already and Cilantro in abundance, as well as most lettuce, soy beans, and mint.

Hi Caligirl You are in Zone 9 which has a minimum average temperature of about 20 to 25 degrees according to the USDA hardiness zone map. My brother also lives in Zone 9 and the daily high temperatures there are already running in the mid 70's so I would assume yours will be around that. I would think by the end of February you could plant most any of the fast growing vegetables. I have included a link to a chart giving the average days to maturity for a lot of vegetables. You have 90 days so give yourself a little leeway and say 70 days to maturity. Pick any of the vegetables on the chart you like with a days to maturity less than 70 and you should be ready for your 'feast'. I hope this helps Johnny
