What is the best way to grow a pumpkin?

What is this plant? Is it a pumpkin? What should I do with it?

  • My dad noticed a squash plant growing on the back porch one day while he was weed whacking. He tenderly skipped around it and let it grow. Now, a couple of weeks later, it's gotten way bigger. For all respects it looks like a squash plant - spikey stems; huge, rough hand-shaped leaves; big yellow orange flowers - but so far we haven't noticed any fruit behind the flowers. I was wondering, where could a squash plant come from? But then I remembered that I carved my pumpkin for 2008's Halloween on the back porch. Could it be a pumpkin? And what should I do? Bring it back to the rest of the garden to enjoy fertilizer and regular waterings, or just let it happily bloom away where it's been growing quite well anyway?

  • Answer:

It's blooming; too late to move it. Yeah, it could be a pumpkin. Pumpkins are in the same family as squash. The plants look a lot alike. Odds are good that's what it is since you know you carved a pumpkin there last fall.

Just leave it where it is. If it's a pumpkin you can deep fry the blooms dipped in batter. They are very tasty.

Logically, it sounds like a pumpkin plant started from your Halloween pumpkin. Squash also have a flower where the vegetable will produce, but most squash I grow are mounding yellow necks. Your pumpkin plant will grow far and wide over the summer. If you can, move it to your garden. Beware that it will encrouch on your other plants eventually. My pumpkins about strangled my tomato plants one year.
