How do I cut the TOP yellow part of my lucky bamboo?

Why is my bamboo plant turning yellow? Please Help!?

  • A friend of mine had a bamboo in soil. I noticed they didn't put attention to it and it was not straight. I convinced them to let me take it. I've had it in water for about 3 weeks now. It quickly straightened and seemed a lot better. Recently though, I noticed that the middle part of it where it had 2 hoops and part of the stem below turned yellow. I thought it was the light from the window, so I moved it, but it didn't make a difference. So I decided to cut the yellow out and sadly throw it away. I kept the bottom of the stem with roots and the top part with leaves in the same water. Now, I'm noticing that only the top of the bottom part is turning yellow. I don't use fertilizer. I put a betta fish in the vase about 2 weeks ago, so I add a little bit of conditioner every time I change the water (once every week or 2 weeks). I don't know what to do about it, I really don't want it to end up dying!

  • Answer:

If it's the stem that turned yellow, it's probably rot. It was a good thing that you cut it out before it spread because yellow tissue almost never comes back. There was probably still some contamination left behind, however, in the lower half. Try cutting it again significantly below the yellow tissue so that there's no chance that any infection could be left behind. Make sure that the top of the stalk stays dry while it heals. Hopefully, if you keep your plant in enough light, it will establish water roots and heal up nicely. Hope that helped!
