Growing strawberries. No BS answers!!?
-
I live in Arizona and strawberries do not grow very well outside, so I'm attempting to grow them inside. I have no money to buy a strawberry plant, so I just pulled some seeds from a strawberry in my fridge. I put them in a small about 5 inch Terra cotta pot expecting only one or two sprouts. I got 9 sprouts instead. Knowing that strawberries are ground plants and that all 9 would not do well in my small pot, I moved them to a much bigger one, about 12-13 in across made out of recycled plastic and over a foot deep. I think I moved them to soon and most have gone into I think shock, only a couple still look as they were before transplanting. Mind these are very young sprouts, maybe a week to a week and a half old. I keep the soil well drained and the soil is all purpose potting soil that I got a couple years ago but never used. My question is, now that I've gotten the plants (hopefully) started, what do I need to know about strawberries to keep them growing? Tell me sunlight conditions, watering conditions, spacing, how to get them to grow strawberries and how often, temp conditions, any pruning involved, and anything else I need to know for my strawberries to grow.

Hon, the sad fact is that you aren't going to get very many strawberries growing them indoors in a container, since you'll need quite a few plants to get an appreciable amount of berries. If you must, I suggest a "pocket" type of container, preferably terracotta, that has an open space at the top and pockets down the sides. (They are often actually called "strawberry pots"). In my garden I space my plants about a foot apart. They do, of course, require full sun and appreciate moist (but not wet) growing conditions. They can be heavy feeders, bit the good news is that they're not particular about soil. Keep the suckers snipped off for the first year, and try to resist allowing them to fruit the first year, too; when a berry develops, pluck it off. That way, you'll get a larger, healthier plant that will bear better in subsequent years. Starwberry plants need to be repalced every 3/4 years; if not, they eventually stop bearing. I grow an "everbearing" type called Tribute, available in many nursery catalogues. I've picked from June up until Thanksgiving some years, and the quality is wonderful :)

You transplanted them too young, thats why nearly all of them died, strawberries arent usually grown from seed they use the runners that they send out, so if yours go well and they send out runners you can expect 2 more plants from every plant, each plant should be in its own pot, make sure they get the sun from 12pm till about sunset, if its a really hot day give them some morning sun then move into shade at about 1pm, water them every 2-4 days but do it in the morning so the leaves are dried by night time so they dont get diseases etc,but check the soil before watering, they need a rich soil to grow good, so liquid fertilize every month or so, they need to be mulched, to keep the fruit clean, you can use straw, leaves, bark etc, i usually use leaves from plants i know are high in nutrients like dandelion leaves, borage is a companion plant with strawberries, apparently they grow better because they improve the soil for the strawberries benefit.

I don't have answer to all your questions, I can tell you that if you want to try seeding again, leave them in the small pot (such as a 3 to 5 inch pot) longer before transplanting. Allowing them to become root bound would be best but not necessary before transplanting. Strawberry plugs will grow very well outside in a whiskey barrel or a galvanize tub. Preference to the whiskey barrel because it drains well.
