How do leaves change colors?

Do leaves of ALL trees change colors and fall, or is it just some?

  • I'm writing a story, and basically, i just want to know it it's ok to write about the leaves falling of a tree in a forest. i can't really imagine a forest without the leaves, no matter what time of the year. if this is a "stupid" question, i'm sorry. i'd rather look stupid here than have my story look stupid. thanks.

  • Answer:

All leaves that change color fall, but not all leaves change color. Our Maples and Oaks change color and fall. But our Manzanita and Madrone only change the leaves that are going to shed. And conifers like Pines and Cedar slowly shed year round.

only the deciduous ones.

There are two main types of trees: deciduous and non-deciduous or 'evergreens". Many forests in eastern north american are deciduous trees, those that lose their leaves in the fall. Non-deciduous trees, like pines, are confinually growing and replacing what they lose so they aren't completely bare like the deciduous ones are in fall and winter and they stay green.
