How do I care for a small Peruvian Torch cactus?

How to care for my new cactus?

  • I bought a cute little cactus which I want in my room ( it has many windows and sunlight). The cactus has a smooth stalk with a pink swollen spikey top with "Pom poms" growing on it. What is the best way to make it thrive in my room? (soil, fertilizer, ect). Thanks!

  • Answer:

It needs to be in a sunny window. It needs to be watered when the soil gets dry and the water needs to be poured out of the tray to keep it from sitting in water so it will not get root rot and store up to much water. It stores up water and if it gets to much it will swell and crack. It would be best to wait a month or more to fertilize it. Information about Moon cactus is down the page in the site below.

They sell ceramic pots that are about 14 inches wide and 2 inches high that make a very nice base for cactus. Just fill the pot with sandy soil and plant your cactus in the center. Water everything real good and sit it in direct sunlight. About every three months give it some fertilizer that is in liquid form. Just pour it around on the sand next to the plant. When the sand dries out, re-water. Don't keep the sand wet all the time. It doesn't hurt when you water to pour the water all over the plant and let it run into the sand. In the summer you can sit it outside but don't forget to water it. I keep mine in the house year round.

Do Not change the soil and Do Not add fertilizer. Plants arrive at the stores well fertilized. Only water once a month, like a cactus would get if it lived in the desert. Overwatering will be the best way to kill a cactus. Place in the sunny window, East, South or West. A foot or so from the glass. Do some online research and search for that cactus for more info. You may need to transplant in 6 months to a year.

Agree with Jean. Cacti thrive on neglect. Guessing you bought a grafted cactus like these: http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/images?_adv_prop=image&fr=ush-ans&va=grafted+cactus Don't be surprised if it doesn't last a year even with your best negligent care.
